Netflix: Updates to TOS & Privacy Statement

Netflix

What’s changing on Netflix (in simple terms)?

1. Interactive features
They’re adding things like voting, polls, or similar features during shows or live content. Nothing major for now—just new ways to engage.

2. Ads are becoming more important
Netflix is expanding how ads work and how they use your data to personalize them.

Where will you actually see ads?

This is the part they don’t say directly, but here’s what it means in practice:

If you are on an ad-supported plan:

  • Ads can play before a movie or episode starts (like YouTube pre-roll)
  • Ads can appear during the movie or episode (short breaks in the middle)
  • Ads can show between episodes if you’re binge-watching

If you are on a standard/premium plan (no ads):

  • You currently won’t see ads during movies or series
  • But Netflix is hinting at expanding ads into:
    • live events or shows
    • new formats (like podcasts or interactive content)

So even if your main movies stay ad-free, ads could appear in new types of content in the future.

What about personalized ads?

Netflix says:

  • They may use your behavior (what you watch, click, etc.)
  • They may also get data from other websites (e.g. if you interacted with an ad elsewhere)

This is used to show you ads tailored to your interests.

You can turn this off in settings → then ads are still there, just more random.

  • Ads are mainly tied to cheaper plans right now
  • They show before, during, and between content
  • Netflix is preparing to expand ads into more types of content (not just movies/series)
  • You’ll likely see more ads over time, not less
